What is the naturalization process?

The naturalization process is the process by which legal foreign citizens may become citizens of the United States. It is regulated by U.S. immigration law and occurs through a step-by-step process. The naturalization process typically begins by filing the Application for Naturalization (Form N-400) with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). After the application is reviewed, an applicant may be required to attend an in-person interview, during which he or she will be asked questions about eligibility for naturalization, as well as knowledge of U.S. history and government. If approved for naturalization, the applicant must attend an Oath of Allegiance ceremony, in which he or she will swear, or affirm, their allegiance to the United States before becoming a U.S. citizen. In Washington State, naturalization applicants must meet additional requirements to become eligible. For example, they must have lived in the state for at least the previous three months, they must have been a permanent resident of the United States for at least five years, and they must have good moral character and knowledge of the English language. They must also pass a naturalization test, which tests the applicant’s knowledge of civics, as well as their understanding of the responsibilities and privileges of U.S. citizenship. Once the naturalization process is completed, applicants will receive their certificate of naturalization, which is valid proof of U.S. citizenship. After naturalization, applicants will enjoy the same rights and privileges as any other U.S. citizen, such as the right to vote and the ability to obtain a U.S. passport.
