Is it possible for a child to become a U.S. Citizen?
Yes, it is possible for a child to become a U.S. Citizen in Alaska. As in all states, a minor may obtain U.S. Citizenship by being born in the United States, or by having at least one parent who is a U.S. Citizen. In order to become a citizen through naturalization, a person has to be of or over the age of 18. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, a minor can become a citizen through a parent if the parent naturalizes, and the parent has legal and physical custody of the child. Additionally, a minor who is the spouse of a U.S. citizen may apply for naturalization as long as they are 18 or older when they apply. Although a minor cannot apply for naturalization, it is possible for a minor to receive derivative citizenship through their parent(s). Derivative citizenship is when a child automatically receives U.S. Citizenship because one or both of the parent(s) is a U.S. citizen. To be eligible for derivative citizenship the child must be under the age of 18, living in the United States, and have at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen. In summary, it is possible for a child to become a U.S. citizen in Alaska, either through being born in the United States, or by having one or both parents become naturalized citizens, and having the child receive derivative citizenship.
