What is the process of applying for a green card for a child?

In Alaska, the process of applying for a green card for a child begins with the completion of an I-130 form. This form, or Petition for Alien Relative, must be submitted to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on behalf of the parent or guardian of the child. This petition essentially establishes the parent/guardian-child relationship in order to demonstrate the child’s eligibility for an immigrant visa. The next step in the process is for the child to submit an I-485 form, or an Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. This form should include the child’s biographical information, such as country of birth, residence, and travel history. In addition, the child must submit any applicable supporting documents, such as passports and birth certificates. These documents must be translated into English and certified by a translator. Once this form is submitted, the application will be reviewed by USCIS. During this process, the child may be asked to attend an interview and/or to undergo a medical examination. If the child is approved, they will receive temporary documentation of conditional lawful permanent residence. After the two-year conditional period has passed, the child will be able to submit the form I-751 to remove these conditions and receive their permanent green card.
