What is deportation?

Deportation is the removal of a person from the United States to their country of origin. It is usually done on the basis of the person not having a valid visa or other form of legal permission to be in the United States. It is overseen by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is usually done if the person has overstayed their visa, committed a crime, or is considered a national security threat. In Ohio, if a person is deported, they are returned to their home country unless there is a country that is willing to accept them. The U.S. government usually makes every effort to avoid deportation when possible, and instead will seek alternatives such as voluntary departure or other forms of relief. Although it is possible to appeal a deportation order, it is a challenging process and should be done with the help of an experienced immigration attorney.
