What is a Reentry Permit?

A Reentry Permit is a document issued by the United States government that allows immigrants who have been deported from the United States to legally re-enter the country. In South Carolina, the Reentry Permit is issued by the USCIS field office at Columbia, South Carolina. A Reentry Permit is only available to immigrants who have been deported from the United States within the past three years? It is issued for specific purposes such as attending a medical appointment, attending school, seeing a family member, or returning to the United States to finish out a job contract. In order to be eligible for a Reentry Permit, the following requirements must be met: the immigrant must demonstrate a strong attachment to the United States and must show a need to return to the United States; the immigrant must have a valid, unexpired passport; and must not have a criminal record. The immigrant must also have a valid cause for leaving the United States and must be able to prove that they are lawfully present in the United States. The applicant must also complete and submit the Reentry Permit application form, along with the necessary documents including a valid passport, evidence of a valid cause for departure, and proof of their current lawful presence in the United States. Once a Reentry Permit has been issued, the immigrant must present it to immigration officers when they arrive at a United States port of entry. The Reentry Permit can be valid for up to two years, depending on the circumstances.
