What is an Arrest Warrant?
An arrest warrant is a court-issued document that authorizes a law enforcement officer to arrest an individual who has been accused of a crime. In District of Columbia, arrest warrants may be issued for those suspected of violating immigration law, such as individuals who have been ordered to be deported from the United States. When an arrest warrant is issued for an individual subject to deportation, a law enforcement officer may take the person into custody in order to begin the deportation process. Generally, arrest warrants are issued by a judge when authorities believe an individual has committed a crime, but the person cannot be located for arrest. The arrest warrant gives officers the legal authority to make an arrest and bring the individual to court for formal charges. In the case of deportation, the individual is taken into custody and held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement until their case is heard by a judge, at which point they may be deported from the United States.
