What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?
The Diversity Visa Lottery, also known as the Green Card Lottery, is a program run by the United States which allows citizens of low-immigration nations to apply for a Green Card, which grants permanent residence in the US. The program was created in order to promote diversity within the US population. In Alaska, the Diversity Visa Lottery is administered by the US Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS). Individuals who wish to enter the lottery must first register online. This registration must be completed during a specific period of time, usually beginning in October of the previous year and ending in early November. Then, successful applicants will receive notification in the spring of the following year. If you are successful in the Diversity Visa Lottery, you may be eligible for a green card and the right to work and live in the US legally. However, before receiving the green card, applicants are subject to a criminal background check and certain health screenings. For those who are unsuccessful in the lottery, deportation from the US is a possibility. Individuals who are found to be in the US unlawfully, or who fail to pass the immigration and naturalization test, may be subject to deportation. Deportation proceedings for those in the Diversity Visa Lottery are usually handled by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
