What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?

The Diversity Visa Lottery is a U.S. government program that provides green cards to 50,000 people from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States each year. The program was created by Congress in 1990 to promote diversity in the United States. The lottery is open to those who are from countries that have had fewer than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the last five years. Lottery winners are selected through an online random computer drawing. Winners can then apply for a green card and begin the process of obtaining permanent residence in the United States. During this process, the Department of Homeland Security runs background checks on the applicants. The Diversity Visa Lottery is unrelated to deportation in Louisiana or any other state. It is a way for people from certain countries to gain the opportunity to live and work in the United States. The lottery does not grant any other rights or benefits, and lottery winners are still subject to U.S. immigration laws and deportation if they do not abide by those laws.
