What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?
The Diversity Visa Lottery, also called the Green Card Lottery, is an annual program that allows those from certain countries to gain legal immigration status in the United States. Every year, 55,000 visas are given out through the lottery, allowing applicants to become eligible for permanent U.S. residency. In order to apply for the Diversity Visa Lottery in Pennsylvania, one must first be from an eligible country. Eligible countries are ones with low levels of immigration to the U.S. in the previous five years. Once an individual is from an eligible country, they can then register for the lottery. When the lottery opens, they can then submit an application. Pennsylvania residents applying to the Diversity Visa Lottery must submit enough information to demonstrate their eligibility for a visa, including their name, date of birth, home address, contact information, passport information, educational and work history, family information, and more. After the application is complete, the applicant must wait to find out if they won the lottery. If the applicant is selected, they will be contacted by mail regarding the next steps for the visa process, which may include medical exams and interviews. Once the Diversity Visa Lottery is complete, those granted the visa may legally reside and work in Pennsylvania, and eventually, may also become eligible for U.S. citizenship.
