How do I apply for a green card based on employment?
Applying for a green card based on employment in Illinois begins with your employer filing a petition, known as Form I-140, on your behalf. The form details information about the job offered, the requirements of the job, and your qualifications. Once the I-140 has been filed, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will review and approve the form. If approved, the USCIS will send you a notice of receipt. You will then need to file Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. This is the actual application for a green card. On the form you will need to provide information about yourself and your employment. Once your form is approved, you will be required to attend a biometrics appointment. During this appointment, you will provide your fingerprints and have your photo taken for the green card. After this appointment, you will be sent an employment-based green card and will receive the physical card in the mail. In most cases, the entire process from filing Form I-140 to receiving your employment-based green card will take around six to eight months. To make sure that your application is processed as quickly as possible, you should make sure to provide all necessary documents and fill out the forms carefully.
