What is an asylum application?

An asylum application is an application for the legal status of an individual seeking protection from persecution in their home country. In the US, asylum seekers must meet the criteria for refugee status, which means they must prove that they were persecuted, or fear future persecution, based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or other protected characteristic. In South Carolina, asylum seekers must apply for asylum through the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office. Asylum seekers must submit a detailed application that includes evidence of persecution or fear of persecution. Additionally, they must provide proof of identity and other supporting documents. To apply for asylum, refugees must also pay an application fee and submit to a biometric (fingerprint) and security check. Once asylum is granted, the refugee is eligible for many of the same rights and benefits as a US citizen, including the right to work, access to medical care, and the ability to travel freely. Additionally, refugees can apply for legal permanent residency and eventually become a US citizen. Despite the protections afforded by asylum, not all asylum applications are successful. The process can be lengthy and complicated, and asylum seekers are encouraged to seek assistance from an experienced immigration lawyer to ensure their application is properly filed and documented.
