What is an asylum application?
An asylum application is a formal request for legal protection from a foreign government. It is made by an individual who is fleeing their home country due to fear of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. In Washington state, individuals may apply for asylum at the regional Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Seattle. To apply, an individual must fill out the Form I-589 (Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal), which is available through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. This form must then be filed with the appropriate ICE office. In addition to the I-589 form, an individual must submit supporting documents, such as evidence of a “well-founded fear of persecution” in their home country. This could include photographs or letters from individuals who have experienced similar persecution. The asylum applicant will also need to provide a detailed narrative of their experience and the reasons for their asylum claim. Once the application is submitted, the asylum process can take several months to a year to complete. During this time, the individual will appear in front of an immigration judge and may be asked additional questions about their application. If their claim is approved, the individual will be granted the right to remain in the U.S. indefinitely and will be provided a work permit.
