What is the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program?
The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, commonly known as the green card lottery, is a United States government program created to facilitate immigration from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. This program grants 50,000 immigrant visas each year to individuals from countries that have low rates of immigration to the United States. In order to qualify for the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, an individual must be a native of a nation that is eligible for the program. Eligible applicants must have a high school education or equivalent, be able to demonstrate the ability to financially support themselves and their family members, and be determined to be admissible to the United States as a permanent resident. If an individual is selected in the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program Lottery, they will be able to apply for a U.S. immigrant visa and Green Card. Selected individuals can bring their spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 with them to the United States. In the state of North Carolina, eligible individuals who are selected through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program can obtain assistance through legal aid organizations in understanding the program requirements, applying for the visa, and adjusting their status.
