What is the process for a fiancé(e) to become a US citizen?

In Massachusetts, the process for a foreign-born fiancé(e) to become a U.S. citizen is largely dependent upon the type of visa they possess. If they entered the United States on a K-1 fiancé(e) visa, they may apply directly for an adjustment of status to become a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) and become eligible to become a citizen of the United States. Once the individual becomes an LPR, they may be eligible to become a citizen after having held LPR status for a minimum of five years (three years with eligibility through marriage to a US citizen). This timeframe can be shortened to three years if the individual is married to a US citizen, as long as the spouse has been a US citizen for at least three years. The foreign-born fiancé(e) must meet all the requirements to become a citizen, including the ability to pass a civics and English language test, and must also be of “good moral character” and have an affection for the principles of the United States Constitution. Once they have met these requirements, the foreign born fiancé(e) can apply for naturalization with Form N-400 and submit it to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). From there, they will need to be fingerprinted and attend an interview, where they prove their eligibility for naturalization and take the Civics and English tests. After successfully passing the tests and the interview, the foreign-born fiancé(e) can take the Oath of Allegiance and officially become a United States citizen.
