What are the differences between public and private international law?

Public international law (also known as international law or the law of nations) deals with the conduct of sovereign states and international entities. It is based on agreements between nations or the practice of international customary law that has been developed over time. Private international law (also known as the conflict of laws) deals with how the competing laws of different countries are to be applied in a case. This law is mainly concerned with disputes between private persons or businesses that involve different countries, and how to apply each country’s laws to the case. Public international law focuses on the actions of governments and international entities. It sets the global rules for interactions between sovereign states, including those concerning international trade, human rights, disarmament, and the use of military force. It may also cover issues such as the responsibility of corporations and other non-state actors that operate across borders. By contrast, private international law is limited to the rules and regulations that apply to the relationship between private individuals or entities in international situations. In West Virginia, private international law operates alongside public international law. This is due to the fact that the state of West Virginia may be party to international agreements, such as agreements between states or agreements with foreign countries. The state of West Virginia is also required to adhere to the obligations found in international treaties and conventions that have been ratified by the US government. Private international law can also be used in cases when a West Virginia court is facing issues related to matters beyond its jurisdiction. In such cases, the court must consider the laws of other countries that would be most applicable to the case.
