What is the role of the International Court of Justice in international litigation?
The International Court of Justice (ICJ), also known as the World Court, is the main judicial arm of the United Nations. The ICJ has jurisdiction over disputes between countries concerning international law. This means that the ICJ has the authority to hear and make decisions in international litigation cases. The ICJ is located in The Hague, Netherlands and usually only hears cases that have been referred to it by the United Nations Security Council or by parties involved in the litigation, such as states and other international organizations. The ICJ has the authority to hear cases brought against states, international organizations, and individuals who are accused of violating international law. The ICJ can issue binding judgments on the parties involved in a case and has the authority to enforce its decisions. This means that the decisions the ICJ makes can be enforced if the parties to the case do not comply with the decision. In addition to resolving disputes, the ICJ also has the authority to issue advisory opinions on legal questions. This means that the International Court of Justice has a lot of power and influence when it comes to international litigation. The ICJ plays a vital role in ensuring that justice is upheld in international law and that states and other parties comply with their international obligations.
