What is a class action suit and when can it be used in international litigation?

A class action suit is a legal action, usually in civil court, which is brought forth by an individual or a group of individuals, known as a “class”, on behalf of other individuals who have similar legal claims. This type of litigation is most commonly used when the number of people affected by the same injustice is too large to feasibly bring individual suits. In international litigation, class actions can be used if a large number of individuals have suffered a similar injury or harm due to the same action or inaction of a government or a business entity operating in more than one country. It allows a group of people to band together in order to achieve better results than would be possible on an individual basis. In the state of Washington, a class action suit may be initiated in the federal court if one of the conditions that make class action appropriate has been met. The court must also find that a class of individuals or entities exists, which can be readily identified and that the relief sought makes a class action the most efficient and reasonable way to handle the case. Class action lawsuits are an important tool in helping achieve justice for a large number of individuals. In international litigation, class actions can provide a way to bring justice to those affected by the same injustice in multiple countries.
