What is the difference between an immigrant and non-immigrant visa?

An immigrant visa is a type of visa that allows a foreign national to live and work in the U.S. permanently, while a nonimmigrant visa is a short-term visa for those who intend to stay temporarily. Immigrant visas are generally granted to people who wish to obtain a green card or Lawful Permanent Resident status in the U.S. After getting an immigrant visa, they can remain in the U.S. indefinitely as long as they maintain their permanent resident status. Nonimmigrant visas are usually for people who want to visit or work in the U.S. for a certain period of time. Employment and student visas are two types of nonimmigrant visas. Nonimmigrant visas can also be issued for travel, business, or pleasure. The length of stay is determined by the visa expiration date. In California, marriage-based visas are considered immigrant visas. These visas are granted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who want to sponsor their foreign-born spouse to come to the U.S. and obtain a green card. Once approved, the foreign-born spouse will have the same rights and privileges as a U.S. citizen, including the right to work, obtain U.S. citizenship, and travel internationally. After a period of time, the immigrant spouse is eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.
