What is the process for permanent residence through the Registry?

The process of gaining permanent residence through the Registry in Washington involves three steps. First, the applicant must reside in the United States continuously since before January 1, 1972. This means that if an applicant arrived after January 1, 1972, they are not eligible for the Registry. Second, the applicant must have resided continuously in the United States since then. This means they haven’t gone abroad for a lengthy period of time and have generally been in the US since before 1972. Finally, the applicant must apply for permanent residence. This can be done through a form I-485 and any associated documents. The application must include the applicant’s current address and other important details that the USCIS needs to assess the application. The application must then be signed and returned to the USCIS. Once the application is submitted, it is reviewed to see if the applicant is eligible for permanent residence. If approved, the applicant will receive their registration card, which is the official evidence of permanent residence. This card should be kept with the applicant at all times as proof of their status in the US.
