The process of becoming a U.S. citizen through adopted children in California is known as the Child Citizenship Act (CCA). This act allows children adopted by U.S. citizens to automatically become U.S. citizens. To qualify for the Child Citizenship Act, an adopted child must be under 18 years of age and legally adopted by a U.S. citizen parent. The adoption must be legally completed according to the laws of the state where the child resides. After the adoption has been finalized, the child may apply for a Certificate of Citizenship. After the child is issued a Certificate of Citizenship, they then can apply for a U.S. passport or other proof of citizenship. This allows them to travel and receive all the benefits and privileges granted to U.S. citizens.
