What is immigration law?

Immigration law is a branch of law which deals with the legal rights of both immigrants and citizens of the United States. It governs all aspects of immigration, including but not limited to visas, permanent residency, citizenship, deportation, employment, and family-based immigration. Generally, a person who wishes to come to the United States must first obtain a visa. Visas are specific to the purpose of the immigrant, whether it be for family, employment, education, or other reasons. Once they have the visa, the immigrant is allowed to enter the country and begin the process of becoming a permanent resident. The primary immigration law applicable to California is the federal law, which is administered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). USCIS also administers federal regulations to protect the rights of legal immigrants and citizens. Immigration law in California also includes state level laws that govern the specific state requirements for residency in California. These laws can include but are not limited to restrictions on employment, housing, education, and other social services. These laws are designed to protect and support immigrants as they establish residency in California. Overall, immigration law is a complex and comprehensive set and regulations and procedures that govern the rights and responsibilities of both immigrants and citizens of the United States. This law is designed to ensure that immigrants and citizens are able to remain safe and secure while living and working in the United States.
