What is immigration law?

Immigration law, in the context of New Mexico, is the laws and regulations that govern the entry, residence, and/or exit of non-nationals (persons not born in or holding citizenship of the U.S.) who are wishing to enter, stay in, and/or leave the state. Immigration law also determines the methods and conditions by which people can become legal permanent residents in New Mexico, as well as how and when they can acquire citizenship. Immigration law also covers the rights of immigrants, such as the right to work, the right to open a business, the right to receive education, and so on. Immigration law regulates a wide range of activities related to immigration and can also provide relief from deportation or removal by granting special status such as asylum or permanent residency. Immigration law can also provide protection from exploitation and mistreatment due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of immigration laws. Additionally, immigration laws can help people reunite separated family members and ensure that immigrants have access to necessary services and resources while living in New Mexico.
