What is immigration law?
Immigration law is the set of laws and regulations that govern the entry, stay, and removal of people who are not citizens of the United States. Immigration law applies to people who enter the country without permission, visa holders, people who want to become citizens, those who have been deported, and more. In the state of Texas, immigration law is mostly handled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DHS is responsible for security checks, border control, and immigration detention and removal operations. The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) within the DHS is responsible for determining who is eligible to enter the United States and for granting residency and citizenship to those who qualify. Individuals must meet certain criteria to be eligible for residency or citizenship. These include having legal permanent residence or visa status, having a job offer from a sponsoring U.S. employer, having a family member who is a citizen, or having asylum from persecution in their home country. Individuals who are granted residency or citizenship must adhere to laws and regulations set by the DHS and INS. These laws and regulations include passport and visa requirements, application and processing procedures, criminal background checks, and biometric screenings. Immigration law is a complex and constantly changing set of laws and regulations. It is important to stay informed on the latest changes and work with a knowledgeable, experienced lawyer if you have any questions about your rights or immigration status.
