What is the difference between permanent residency and citizenship?
Permanent residency and citizenship indicate two very different levels of legal status in North Carolina. Permanent residency is for individuals who have been granted lawful permission to live and work in the US for an extended period of time, usually for a period of 10 years. Permanent residents hold a green card that allows them to remain in the country, but with certain restrictions. Permanent residents are able to obtain a driver’s license and obtain certain types of employment, but they are not able to vote in national elections or serve in certain government positions. In contrast, citizenship is the legal status of an individual who is a national of a particular country. Citizenship is obtained through naturalization, which is a formal process by which an individual who is not a citizen becomes a citizen of a country. Once a citizen, that individual has the right to vote in national elections, serve in the military, and enjoy certain other rights and privileges not available to those with only permanent residency status in North Carolina. Citizenship also comes with legal responsibilities, such as obeying the laws of the country, paying taxes, and respecting the rights of other citizens.
