How can I extend my visa?

If you need to extend your visa in Virginia, you must first contact the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to determine your eligibility. Depending on the type of visa you hold, requirements for an extension may vary. If your visa falls under the nonimmigrant category, you may be eligible to submit an application to USCIS to extend your stay in the United States. Generally, to apply for a visa extension, you must file Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status. Along with your form, you may need to provide USCIS with evidence of your immigration status, valid passport, two passport-style photos, travel documents, and proof of your financial ability to support yourself during your stay in the United States. If you are a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) or Green Card holder, you may be able to renew or replace your Green Card for free if it is lost, stolen, mutilated, or you have a change of name or address. To replace or renew your Green Card, you must use Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. You may also need to extend a visa based on special circumstances. For example, if you are an asylum seeker, you may be granted a work permit. In this case, you must file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. It is important to note that the process for extending and renewing visas in Virginia is complicated and you should use the proper resources and forms to do so. USCIS has resources available to help you understand the process and answer any questions you have.
