What are the different paths to US citizenship?
There are several paths to obtaining US citizenship. Each of these paths has its own set of requirements and processes to follow. The most common way to become a US citizen is to obtain lawful permanent residence, also known as a green card. This can be done either through family based immigration, employment based immigration, or the Diversity Visa Lottery Program. Once a person has obtained lawful permanent residence, they can then apply for naturalization. Naturalization is the process of becoming a citizen through a combination of residence, knowledge of the US Constitution, and good moral character. The necessary steps to naturalize include filing an application, having a biometrics appointment, being interviewed by a US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer, and taking the oath of allegiance. For those who have a US citizen or US national parent, additional paths may be available. Those under 18 may be eligible for automatic citizenship through the process of acquiring citizenship through one’s parent. If one’s parent is a US citizen, either by birth or naturalization, and one was under 18 on the date the parent became a citizen, then one may obtain citizenship automatically. Finally, those who have served in the US armed forces may also be eligible for citizenship. Members of the US Armed Forces can apply for expedited naturalization. This requires fewer steps, and applicants are exempt from most of the requirements normally necessary for naturalization. Overall, there are several paths to achieving US citizenship. Depending on one’s background and qualifications, some paths may be more suitable than others.
