What are the different pathways to US residency?
The United States offers various pathways for foreign nationals to attain residency status. The most common pathway to residency is through family-based immigration, which allows permanent residents and citizens to sponsor their family members who are living outside the country. Other pathways include employment-based immigration, where foreign nationals can apply for a work visa and eventually become a permanent resident; and diversity visas (also referred to as a lottery visa), which offers a set number of visas each year to foreign nationals from countries with low immigration rates to the US. Additionally, individuals can also pursue refugee status or asylum if they are fleeing persecution in their home country. Lastly, certain foreign nationals may also be eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which offers protection from deportation and a renewable work permit in the US. In New Mexico, individuals seeking residency status should consult with an immigration attorney to review all of the available pathways and determine the best route for them. Also, those interested in applying for a work visa should review the available options to determine which category is most appropriate for them. Finally, any foreign national should review the laws and regulations of the United States to make sure they are eligible to apply for the program they are interested in.
