What are the different pathways to US residency?
There are various pathways to US residency for those living in Washington. The first pathway is through family-based immigration. In family-based immigration, someone who is a US citizen or Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) can petition for a foreign-born relative to be granted permanent residency in the US. If the foreign-born relative is already present in the US, they can apply to become an LPR while remaining in the US. Another pathway is through employment-based immigration. In this route, individuals who have certain skills or are qualified workers may qualify for a green card. Additionally, employers who seek to hire foreign-born workers may also apply for permanent residency. Investors can also gain permanent residency through the EB-5 visa program. This program allows foreign investors to invest substantial funds in projects that create jobs in the US. The fourth pathway is through humanitarian-based immigration. This path is designed for those who are fleeing from persecution in their home countries, or those who are victims of sex/human trafficking, or are victims of criminal activity. The US also has some programs in place to grant permanent residency to certain individuals, including asylum seekers, refugees, those who have been granted political asylum, and individuals who have been granted legal protection due to special circumstances. Finally, those individuals who win the US green card lottery may be eligible for permanent residency. The green card lottery is an annual program that awards over 50,000 visas to individuals from underrepresented countries.
