What documents do I need to naturalize?

To naturalize in New York, you will need to provide a variety of documents depending on your individual circumstances. Generally, you will need to provide proof of identity, proof of United States residency, and proof that you meet the eligibility criteria. Proof of identity can include a driver’s license, Social Security card, or a valid passport. Examples of documents that can be used to prove that you are a resident of the United States include an Alien Registration Card, Green Card, or visa. To meet the eligibility criteria, you must be at least 18 years of age, have been a legal resident of the United States for the past five-year period, and have a current green card. Additionally, you must also prove moral character, demonstrate a basic understanding of the English language, and pass a U.S. civics test. If you have served in the U.S. armed forces or have an immediate relative who is a United States citizen, you may be eligible for special consideration. You may also be eligible for a waiver of some of the requirements if you cannot meet them due to physical or mental illness. You will also need to submit two recent 2'x2' passport-style photos, the naturalization application (Form N-400), and the naturalization fee. Additionally, you may need to provide additional documents and/or attend an interview with a USCIS officer.
