How long does it take to receive a Fiancee visa?

A Fiancee visa, officially known as a K-1 Nonimmigrant Visa, is a visa used to allow a foreign-citizen fiance of a U.S. citizen to enter the United States to marry that person within 90 days of arrival. Generally speaking, the overall process of obtaining a Fiancee visa may take anywhere from three to six months or even longer. Once an individual has filed the Petition for Alien Fiancee form (Form I-129F) with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the current processing time for this form alone is five to seven months. Once the form is approved, it is then sent to the U.S. consulate or embassy in the alien fiancee’s home country. After arriving at the consulate, the processing time for this part of the visa application process can take anywhere from two to three months. During the visa application process, the alien fiancee will have to complete a medical examination, provide financial documents, and pass an interview. The medical examination has to be conducted by a physician authorized by the U.S. embassy or consulate, while the financial documents submitted must prove that the alien fiancee can financially support himself/herself upon entering the United States or has a sponsor to do so. In addition, the alien fiancee will have to pass an interview with the visa officer which will help determine if the relationship is real and the marriage is not for the purpose of obtaining a visa or citizenship. After the visa application process is complete, the alien fiancee can enter the United States. Once the alien fiancee enters the United States the couple is required to marry within 90 days of the alien’s arrival. Once married, the foreign-citizen spouse may then apply for Permanent Resident or Green Card status in the United States.
