What is the Advance Parole program?

The Advance Parole program enables certain immigrant residents in Texas to travel outside of the United States and then return to the US without having to apply for a new visa. This travel permission is granted as a form of parole to individuals who are not citizens of the United States, but are lawfully present in the country. The Advance Parole program allows immigrants to leave and return to the US in situations of emergency, such as to receive medical treatment, attend a funeral, or take care of an emergency in their home country. It also allows certain immigrants to carry out other activities outside of the United States, including attending school in another country or visiting family. To be eligible for Advance Parole, applicants must have either an active application for adjustment of status or an approved application for deferred action. Obtaining an Advance Parole does not grant any additional immigration benefits other than the permission to travel outside the US and return, and for some applicants it can be a risky process. If Customs and Border Protection (CBP) determines that the individual has violated any terms of the Advance Parole, the applicant can be denied entry into the US and could be subject to removal proceedings. It is important to consult an immigration attorney before applying for Advance Parole or traveling outside of the US with Advance Parole.
