How can I apply for asylum?

If you are a foreign national living in California and are looking to apply for asylum, you will need to fill out and submit an Application for Asylum and Withholding of Removal, or Form I-589. This form can be found on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website. The first step in applying for asylum is to fill out and submit the Form I-589 and the fee. Once you have submitted your form, you will then be scheduled for an asylum interview with a US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Asylum Officer. During the interview, the Asylum Officer will ask questions to determine whether or not you meet the qualifications for asylum. If the Asylum Officer decides that you do meet the qualifications for asylum, you will be granted asylum. However, if the Asylum Officer decides that you do not meet the qualifications, they may refer your application to an Immigration Court, where a judge can review your application and make a final determination on whether or not you qualify for asylum. When applying for asylum, it is important to prepare as much information as possible to support your application. This may include evidence of past or future persecution in your country of origin, evidence of any past traumatic events, or other documents that support your need for asylum. It is also important to remember to be truthful during your asylum interview. False or misleading information given to the Asylum Officer or the Immigration Court can result in a denial of your application or worse.
