What is a refugee Visa?

A refugee visa is a type of visa granted to individuals who have been forced to leave their home country due to persecution, war, or other dangerous conditions. Individuals who are granted refugee status by the United States are allowed to travel to the US for a period of time and then apply for permanent resident status, also known as a green card. In Alaska, an individual may be eligible to apply for a refugee visa if they fear persecution in their home country based on race, religion, national origin, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. An individual must demonstrate that they have experienced or are in danger of experiencing serious harm if they return to their home country. To apply for a refugee visa, an individual must first apply to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for a refugee application form. The application must be completed and sent to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. After the application is processed, the individual must attend an interview with a USCIS officer. Following the interview, the individual may be granted a refugee visa if they meet the eligibility requirements. Once an individual is granted a refugee visa, they may apply for permanent residency in the United States after one year of continuous residency in the United States. After five years of living in the U.S., an individual can then apply for citizenship.
