What is a refugee Visa?
A refugee visa is a type of visa specifically designated for individuals who have fled their home country due to a fear of persecution or danger. These individuals are typically seeking refuge in a different country and must go through a process of applying for their refugee visa. In South Dakota, refugees are required to apply for both a refugee status and a nonimmigrant visa. This is done through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The first step is filing a Refugee/Asylum Application. This application is meant to provide evidence of your need for refugee status in South Dakota. The application must be filled out, signed and notarized. It is also required to submit affidavits, certified copies of passports, and a Refugee Status Letter. Once the Refugee/Asylum application as been reviewed and accepted by the USCIS, the refugee can apply for a nonimmigrant visa. This application must include proof of identity, proof of their refugee status, and proof of financial support. The application will be reviewed and if accepted, the refugee will be issued a refugee visa. The refugee visa is valid for up to four years and will allow the refugee to stay in the host country and work legally. The refugee visa holder is also eligible for certain benefits and rights afforded to legal residents of the host country. However, refugee status does not grant the holder automatic citizenship. Once the refugee visa has expired, the holder must reapply for an extension or for permanent residency.
