What documents do I need to apply for a refugee visa?

When applying for a refugee visa in Vermont, you will need to submit some important documentation. This includes a valid passport or travel document; a completed and signed Vermont Refugee Visa Application form; documents proving your relationship to any family members who may accompany you to Vermont; evidence of any disability, if applicable; a medical exam report, if applicable; evidence of financial support, such as bank statements; two passport-sized photos; and a police certificate from the country in which you are seeking refuge. Additionally, you will need to provide an Affidavit of Support, which is a legal agreement between you and the person in the United States who will be supporting your stay in Vermont. In order to prove your eligibility for a refugee visa, you must meet the refugee definition as outlined by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which includes being an individual fleeing persecution in his or her country of origin. You will also need to provide evidence of persecution if you are applying on the basis of fear of persecution. This could include documents showing you have been previously detained, harassed, or had your human rights violated. You will also need to provide evidence that you have not been convicted of a serious crime and have not engaged in terrorist activities. Your application will be reviewed by the Department of Homeland Security and the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Agency before it is approved. Once your application is approved, you will receive a refugee visa.
