What is the process to apply for a work permit?
In Pennsylvania, obtaining a work permit is a multi-step process which requires certain documents and forms to be completed and submitted. To begin the process, an individual must complete and submit Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form must include the current legal address and telephone number, a current passport-sized photograph, legal evidence of the individual’s residency in Pennsylvania, such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID, and a completed Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Once the forms are properly completed, the individual must submit them to the local USCIS office. After the application is received and reviewed, the individual will be notified either by mail or by email of whether the work permit has been approved or denied. If approved, the individual will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), which is typically valid for one year. The EAD must be presented to an employer or prospective employer in order to work legally in the country. In addition to obtaining an EAD, the individual must also register with the USCIS as an immigrant or a nonimmigrant. This registration is necessary for the individual to obtain legal employment in Pennsylvania. Once the individual has been registered, they will need to submit an application to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to obtain a work permit. This permit is usually valid for six months, and must be renewed regularly. By following the steps outlined above, an individual can successfully apply for a work permit in Pennsylvania. It is important to note that in order to remain legally employed in the state, the individual must abide by local laws and regulations, as well as any state or federal laws governing the employment of immigrants in the area.
