How can I apply for a travel document?

In order to apply for a travel document in California, one must first be a legal resident. This can be accomplished through citizenship or permanent residency. If you are applying for citizenship, you must be able to meet the criteria of being a permanent resident for five years or longer. You must also have been physically present in the United States for at least one-half of the five years preceding the application and have been continuously present in the United States for at least one year prior to filing the application. If you are a permanent resident, you must have proof of your residence, such as your green card, which will allow you to file Form I-131A, which is an Application for Travel Document. The form must be completed in its entirety and it must be accompanied by the correct fee in the form of a money order or check. Other documents that may be requested include a passport, a copy of your birth certificate, proof of your legal presence, and a copy of your permanent resident card. You must also provide two passport-style photos with your I-131A and sign the form in two places. Then, you must mail the form, along with the documents and photographs, to the address provided on the form. Once your applications and documents have been received, your application will be reviewed by the USCIS and you will be notified of the outcome. If everything is approved, you will be issued a travel document that will allow you to travel abroad for up to six months.
