What is the F-1 student visa program?
The F-1 student visa program is a way for international students to study in the United States. It is governed by federal immigration law, specifically the Immigration and Nationality Act, and is administered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). In order to be eligible for an F-1 student visa, students must first be accepted by an accredited school in the United States, such as a college or university. The school must be authorized to enroll international students on a nonimmigrant basis and be listed on the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) list. Once accepted, students must then obtain an F-1 visa from the US Embassy or Consulate in their home country. Once the student has their F-1 student visa, they are allowed to enter the United States and can begin studying at the school indicated on the visa. The F-1 program allows students to work part-time on-campus and also allows for optional practical training (OPT) in their field of study once they have graduated. Students with an F-1 visa can stay for the entire duration of their program and for a period of 60 days after their program ends in order to complete OPT. In the state of Florida, international students with an F-1 student visa are allowed to attend any accredited public or private college, university, community college, or vocational school. They are also subject to the same academic requirements as domestic students, as well as same fees and rules for student visa renewals. All students in the state are also protected by state and federal civil rights legislation, which guarantees an equitable, safe, and secure learning environment.
