What is the CPT program for student visas?

The CPT program, or Curricular Practical Training, is a specific student visa program for those attending school in New Mexico. It allows international students with F-1 visas (non-immigrant student visas) to obtain employment in the United States. This is especially beneficial for international students, since they may not otherwise be able to gain the necessary work experience to apply for permanent U.S. residency. The CPT program in New Mexico is administered by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To qualify for this program, an international student must be enrolled in a college or university that has established a practical training program. In order to apply for and receive CPT status, the student must provide proof of failing to obtain an employment authorization document (EAD) or other related document. Once the student has applied and received the CPT status, he or she will be able to engage in on the job training or an internship. This program is a great opportunity for international students in New Mexico to gain valuable work experience and to further their academic ambitions. It is important to note, however, that CPT status must be approved in advance and that the number of hours of employment an international student can work is limited. Furthermore, the international student should be aware that this work experience is not counted as part of the number of hours necessary to graduate from school.
