What is an H-4 visa?

An H-4 visa is a nonimmigrant visa issued by the United States that allows the immediate family members of an H-1B visa holder (such as a spouse and minor children) to enter and reside in New Mexico. To apply for an H-4 visa, the immediate family member must have a valid H-1B visa and must submit a Form I-539 application. The H-4 visa holder can remain in New Mexico as long as the primary visa holder (the H-1B visa holder) is in valid status. An H-4 visa also allows the immediate family members of an H-1B visa holder to attend school in New Mexico. This is beneficial for international students who wish to bring their families with them to pursue their education in the United States. However, keep in mind that H-4 visa holders cannot work in the United States, so their only source of income would be what the primary visa holder earns. In addition, the spouse of an H-1B visa holder may be eligible for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), which allows them to work in the United States while their H-4 visa is valid. This is a great way for individuals to gain valuable work experience in the United States while their partner is studying or working. Overall, an H-4 visa is an excellent way for the immediate family members of an H-1B visa holder to enter and reside in New Mexico. It is also a great option for international students who wish to bring their family with them while they pursue their education in the US.
