What is an H-4 visa?
An H-4 visa is a type of nonimmigrant visa that enables close family members of a holder of an H-1B visa to enter and live in the United States. H-4 visas are only available to spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 of an H-1B visa holder. H-4 visas are not work visas. This means the visa holders are not authorized to work in the United States and cannot collect wages. However, they can remain in the United States and go to school. For students in North Carolina who are the spouse or the unmarried child of an H-1B visa holder, an H-4 visa allows them to attend school in the United States without needing to obtain a separate student visa. This makes transitioning into a North Carolina school much smoother for those who are already in the United States with an H-1B visa holder. H-4 visa holders are not permitted to stay in the United States indefinitely. Their visa typically needs to be renewed with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) every two to three years. An H-4 visa can also be revoked if the holder’s primary visa-holder, the H-1B visa holder, ceases to maintain lawful status in the United States. It is important for H-4 holders to stay informed about these requirements.
