What is an H-4 visa?
An H-4 visa is a type of visa that allows certain individuals to accompany a primary visa holder to the U.S. The primary visa holder must be either an H-1B (temporary worker) or L-2 (intracompany transferee) visa holder. The H-4 visa is granted to spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21. H-4 visa holders are not allowed to work in the US; however, they may attend school, universities, and other educational institutions while they are in the US. In Pennsylvania, H-4 visa holders are eligible for in-state tuition at public universities and colleges if they meet the school’s standards. An H-4 visa holder may also apply for a driver’s license, open a bank account, and apply for a social security number (SSN). The SSN is important because it allows the visa holder to pay taxes and to apply for other benefits. If an H-4 visa holder wishes to work in the US, they must first apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Once the EAD is granted, the H-4 visa holder may legally work in the US. In summary, the H-4 visa is a visa that allows certain individuals to accompany a primary visa holder to the US. H-4 visa holders may not work in the US, but they may apply for an EAD in order to become employed. H-4 visa holders are also eligible for in-state tuition in Pennsylvania.
