How can I find work in the U.S. with a student visa?

Depending on the type of student visa you have, you are able to work in the U.S. with authorization from the federal government. To be eligible to work, you must have a valid student visa and meet certain requirements. The most common types of student visas include F-1 and M-1 visas. F-1 visa holders are eligible to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months after the completion of their studies. To be eligible, the student must be in good standing at the school they are currently enrolled in and have an offer of employment or practical training related to their field of study. M-1 visa holders are eligible to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which allows foreign students to engage in internships or training programs related to their field of study. To be eligible for CPT, the student must be in good standing at their school and the program must be approved by the school’s Designated School Official (DSO). Additionally, some foreign students may be eligible for on-campus employment if the school is authorized to employ foreign students. The student must be enrolled full-time and the job must be related to their course of study. In order to find out more information about working in the U.S. with a student visa, you should contact an immigration lawyer or visit your local U.S. Embassy or Consulate website.
