What is the difference between an F-1 and an M-1 visa?
An F-1 visa and an M-1 visa are two different types of visas issued for different purposes in the United States. The F-1 visa is issued for students who plan to attend an academic program or English language training program in the United States. The F-1 visa holder is permitted to stay in the country and attend school for the duration of their program. The M-1 visa is issued for students who plan to attend a non-academic or vocational program in the United States. The M-1 visa holder is allowed to stay in the country for the duration of their program, plus an additional 30 days after completion. Both types of visas allow students to apply for part-time work permission while studying in the United States. However, F-1 visa holders are allowed to work on campus only, while M-1 visa holders are allowed to work off campus, too (with approval). Additionally, F-1 visa holders may be granted permission to work temporarily after completing their academic program. In North Carolina, the F-1 visa and M-1 visa are both accepted and recognized. Depending on the type of program that the student plans to attend, either the F-1 visa or the M-1 visa will be issued. It is important to note that the limitations of each visa must be followed while in the United States. Failure to do so can result in consequences, such as deportation.
