What is the difference between an F-1 and an M-1 visa?
An F-1 visa is designed for international students who are coming to the United States to attend an accredited educational institution, such as a college or university, while an M-1 visa is for international students attending vocational or other non-academic institutions in West Virginia. An F-1 visa permits the student to be in the United States for as long as the F-1 student remains enrolled in an educational program and is making progress towards completion. This visa also allows the student to work on campus in certain types of jobs, subject to certain restrictions. Additionally, the student may be eligible to apply for off-campus employment authorization if there is a need for employment due to unusual economic circumstances or internship opportunities at certain employers. In contrast, an M-1 visa is valid for the length of the student’s program, plus an additional 30 day period after completion. Therefore, this visa does not permit the student to stay in the United States once the program has been completed and the student does not allow the student to work on or off campus. The M-1 visa is typically used for those who wish to attend a vocational school or other educational institutions where the students do not receive a degree or diploma upon completion of their studies. Overall, the main difference between an F-1 visa and an M-1 visa is that an F-1 visa allows the student to stay in the United States for a longer period of time and allows the student to work in certain positions, while an M-1 visa only permits the student to stay for a length of time specific to the program and does not permit the student to work during or after the completion of their studies.
