What is the difference between an F-1 and an M-1 visa?
In Wisconsin, there are two types of visas available for students: F-1 and M-1 visas. Both of these visas are for non-immigrant students who wish to enter and stay in the U.S. for a specific purpose, usually for education. An F-1 visa is for students who are pursuing a full-time academic program at a university, college, high school, elementary school, seminary, conservatory, or other academic institution in the U.S. F-1 visa holders are allowed to be employed on campus for up to 20 hours per week during their studies. They may also be eligible for optional practical training (OPT) after completion of their studies. An M-1 visa is for students who are pursuing a vocational or non-academic program at a trade school, technical school, or other educational institution in the U.S. M-1 visa holders are allowed to work off-campus if they can find work related to their educational program. They are not eligible for OPT after completing their studies, but they can pursue a change of status to another visa once their M-1 visa expires. In conclusion, the main difference between an F-1 and an M-1 visa is the type of academic program the student is pursuing. F-1 visas are for those pursuing a full-time academic program, while M-1 visas are for those pursuing a vocational or non-academic program. F-1 visa holders are also eligible for OPT, while M-1 visa holders cannot pursue OPT but can change their status to another visa.
