What is a diversity visa?

A diversity visa is a type of visa issued as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. This program is intended to increase diversity among U.S. immigrants by randomly selecting a set number of people from countries which have had historically low rates of immigration to the United States. Diversity visas are available to citizens from eligible countries who have a high school education, or its equivalent, or who have two years of work experience in an occupation which requires at least two years of training or experience. In California, diversity visas are available to students who meet the requirements of the program. Students can apply for a diversity visa by submitting an application with evidence that they meet the requirements. Depending on the student’s home country, they may be required to attend an interview with a consular officer. The consular officer will review the student’s application and make a decision on whether the student is eligible for a diversity visa. Once the student has been approved for a diversity visa, they will be allowed to travel to the United States to continue their studies. They will have access to a variety of services, including educational and employment opportunities. Students must comply with all requirements of U.S. immigration law, such as maintaining adequate health insurance coverage and maintaining their visa status. With a diversity visa, students can remain in the United States for a period of time to pursue their studies and other opportunities.
