What is the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)?

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is a program administered by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). SEVP is responsible for regulating international students coming to study in the United States, and for ensuring that foreign students are following the necessary guidelines for these studies. SEVP operates the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) which allows for the tracking of international students, educators, and exchange visitors who are studying or engaged in exchange activities. SEVP works in conjunction with Student and Exchange Visitor Programs (SEVP)-Certified Schools and provides national oversight for international students studying in the U.S. It is responsible for maintaining the status of all international students and ensuring that they remain compliant with the laws of the U.S. SEVP also provides support to schools and exchange visitor programs by providing them with the tools they need to facilitate international students’ success and well-being. SEVP also works closely with the Upstate New York Area Immigration Court, which hears all immigration-related cases for the state. The court has the authority to make decisions on immigration cases, and SEVP provides the court with the necessary information to adjudicate cases. Through its work, SEVP is responsible for ensuring that foreign student and exchange visitor programs in New York adhere to the laws of the U.S. and are meeting the needs of international students.
