What is a VisaScreen?

A VisaScreen is a special trademarked credentialing program administered by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) that is designed to ensure that foreign-educated nurses are qualified and capable of practicing nursing in the United States. The program requires applicants to go through an educational and professional review process as well as pass an English language proficiency test approved by the US Department of Homeland Security. In California, foreign students are required to complete a VisaScreen before they are able to obtain a visa to study at an accredited college or university. The program verification process includes an evaluation of an applicant’s educational and professional qualifications, as well as verification of licensure status in their country of origin. The CGFNS also requires applicants to pass an English language proficiency test approved by the US Department of Homeland Security. By ensuring that foreign-educated nurses have met the requirements to practice nursing in the US, the VisaScreen program helps to ensure that the quality of healthcare for California residents is maintained.
