What is the length of a student visa?

Student visas are generally issued for a specified length of time. In New Mexico, most student visas are initially issued for a period of two years. This length of time is generally adequate for a student to complete their desired program of study. It is important to note, however, that student visas are renewable. Once a student has completed their initial program of study, they may apply to extend their student visa for an additional year. This extension is known as Optional Practical Training (OPT). With OPT, students may apply for an extension of their student visa for up to a year to gain practical experience in their field of study. Finally, student visas are renewable beyond the initial two-year period and beyond OPT. Students who wish to continue their studies beyond the initial two-year period and/or beyond OPT may apply for an extension of their student visa for up to five years. Extension applications can be made up to six months before the expiration of the current visa. In conclusion, the length of a student visa in New Mexico depends on the student’s program of study, but generally is issued for a period of two years, with the potential for extension up to five years.
